families

  • Family members have been recognized as the most significant communication partners for children and credited with helping their children achieve their communication potentials (Huer & Lloyd 1990).
  • In addition, clinical experience has shown that family members, including parents, siblings, and often even grandparents, are most frequently the key players in determining a successful outcome for augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) implementation with children.
  • Supporting professionals to help families implement AAC at home helps make communication concrete and functional through daily routines where family members can communicate and interact meaningfully and effectively.
