2c. Language and Vocabularies

Updated by Global Symbols with UNICEF ECARO

book

  • Considering the meaning of words, the way they are written, grammar and word order to create communication boards
  • Thinking about the wider types of words that make up a flexible vocabulary for an AAC user
  • This may mean looking at the most commonly used words for groups of users (core words), as well as personal words and those on the fringe, such as specific topics.
  • If there are no localized vocabularies for AAC in the language required, it may be necessary to set up a translation team to eventually work on the chosen symbol set labels, as well as check newly designed symbols.
