Helping GenAI make symbols for communication using text prompts
When trying to write good text prompts for pictographic Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) symbols using Generative AI (GenAI) it is important to use clear and descriptive language in short sentences. We have learnt over the last few months that you need to...
Define Your Symbol Clearly: Think about what you want your symbol to look like and choose the most straightforward description.
Evaluate and Adjust: Review the generated images. If they don’t match your expectations, refine your text prompt. Choose the closest image, remove the background if needed and see what needs editing or discard the images and have another go
Iterate and Improve: Consider what might be missing from the images and adjust your prompt accordingly. Try using different words and if you get a good result, download immediately!
Tips for Writing Effective Prompts
Use Clear and Specific Words:
- Describe the object, action, or idea in detail.
- Use simple language to make it easy to understand.
Keep Symbols Simple and Uncluttered:
- Focus on essential details and avoid clutter.
- Be specific rather than vague.
Ensure Well-Defined Design and Colours:
- Use clear black outlines for visual clarity.
- Mention colours if they are important.
Avoid Confusion with Abstract Concepts:
- Use locally understood descriptions for abstract ideas.
Personalise and Localise Representations:
- Ensure symbols are meaningful to the individual and setting.
