Rationale and Conceptual Framework

There exist many children worldwide with complex speech, language and communication difficulties. Statistics vary across countries, but it can be around 10%. In many cases, their needs go unmet because of the low availability of affordable solutions, a lack of capacity among professionals, and undeveloped ecosystems for systematic approaches.
This guide recognises that support for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) is implemented within a broader effort to encourage Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) strategies with an inclusive approach to education. The approach must also be family-centred, with parents as key partners in supporting the introduction of AAC solutions and its continuous use in all settings.
